The Creative Process

Step_01.png

Step 1: The Idea

I begin my process by brainstorming ideas, this can involve research, thumbnail sketches and sometimes several rough drafts. This stage allows me to consider the options of color, composition and emotion intended for the final piece.

Step 2: Solidifying the Sketch

Once the idea has taken shape, it’s time to iron out the detail with a sketch. Dependent upon the level of detail and subject manner of the intended finished piece, will greatly affect how long this stage can take, and in some cases the sketch can become the finished piece. The main goal of this stage is to perfect shapes and proportions within the idea to lay down the foundation to guide further refinement.

Step 3: Covering the Canvas

In this stage the sketch becomes a full painting, and at this point I am not concerned with perfecting the details but rather applying value and color across the canvas in an organized fashion to achieve the next step as quickly and accurately as possible. The main purpose of this stage is covering every inch of the canvas with paint, while separating the shapes of light and dark values within the desired color pallet.

Step 4: Finalizing

The final stage of the process and typically the most time consuming. At this stage the details of the painting are rendered out completely, until the work is finished, and the client is satisfied. This is where my knowledge and training come into play the most. Each stroke of the brush is intended to maintain and further enhance all the effort put into the previous stages of work and is thus placed with great thought, and care.

The entire process can take anywhere from a day to a month depending on the level of detail required for the work. At the end of each step I like to check in, evaluate the work and insure your satisfaction when proceeding forward (step 1 and 3 being potential exception). For further inquiring into the process, or any additional questions that you may have about my process Please contact me via email at Heitzan@gmail.com. Thank you, and I look forward to working with you.
